No to both. Diacom uses the parallel port, the AKM cable uses the
serial port, and they are completely and utterly different electronically.
I don't sell a Diacom compatible cable. Also, the flash memory programming
utility of LT1_Edit only operates through the serial port.
Q2. Can I use my Hypertech Power Programmer cable instead of the AKM
cable for LT1_Edit?
No. However, I can put a DB15 connector on my cable (add $10 to the
price of the basic converter, total of $60), and that will allow you to
use your OBDI or OBDII-style HPP connector instead of purchasing my full
cable. Saves you a few bucks. See the order form. It's on there!
Q3. How long does it take for the cable to ship?
I typically build quite a few of them at a time, so my turn around time
is pretty quick. Usually 2 days after I receive your check, I ship it out.
I try to manage my inventory so that I can handle a small rush on parts (I
try to keep several of all the parts on hand). I don't stock a lot of
parts, just enough to keep them rolling out the door. I will do COD's for
people who NEED to have it quickly, but I will only take a money order
with a COD, and I get very angry if CODs are refused. ;) I do travel
somewhat frequently for my "real job", so there are some delays that occur
due to that. If it's been over a week and you haven't heard from me, email
me and ask me where I am and if I've received your check. I always travel
with a laptop. The absolute fastest way, though, is through my Paypal.com
account with a credit card! I've been able to do same day shipments with
it. :) See the order form for the Paypal.com link, and don't forget to
send me your address and car information!
Q4. What year cars have what connectors? Did GM put OBDI PCMs in
OBDII connector cars?
Thank you GM for making my life somewhat difficult. ;) The year
breakpoints for OBDII style connectors go: 1994+ Corvettes, 1995+
F-bodies, and 1996+ B-bodies. So, if you have one of these, you *need* the
OBDII-style connector. If you have an earlier car, you'll have the OBDI
connector, and would need to order that cable. Again, I only deal in OBDI,
but some cars have the OBDII-style connector. Plus, there's a lot of
people who are retrofitting OBDI PCMs in to their OBDII cars, and they're
using my OBDII style cable as well (with no problems!).
Q5. Why buy from AKM?
Well, I think I give pretty decent support on my product, since this is
the only kind of product I have right now. ;) I'm reasonably easy to
communicate with (via email or telephone), and I spend a lot of time
working on improvements and researching for this and future products. I've
got a solid product, and you can ask any of my customers about my service
- join us on the LT1_Edit mailing list. A lot of great tuning information
is being passed along on this list! The more the merrier. I've been a part
of the F-body scene on the 'net since 1996 (spanning the Classic and
Retrofit lists, Third Gen, Fourth Gen, the F-body message forum, the
CamaroZ28.com message forum, DIY-EFI, GMECM, the Atlanta F-list, and
numerous others I've been on and off of), so my name is out there. Feel
free to ask ANY of these sources about me! I'm not subbed to some of them
anymore (don't have much time anymore!), but they'd probably recognize my
name.
I'm also a firm believer in passing along knowledge as I receive it.
That's why I helped create the LT1_Editor Tuning Document. I had a lot of
fun with it, and yes, I still need to finish Page 7. <G>
Q6. What about overseas or Canada?
Yes, I do ship overseas and to Canada. I prefer a money order payable
in US Dollars. We'll need to discuss options as far as shipping -
typically I'll do standard mail to Canada at no additional charge, but
shipping anything overseas can be expensive, so we'll need to discuss
shipping costs via email. I usually get a rough estimate at the USPS.gov
web site or the UPS.com web site and we go from there. They're usually
close to reality for costs. I've shipped to Japan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait,
Canada, and more, so I'm certainly willing and able to ship outside the
US!
Q7. How big of a business are you?
It's just me, with my wife helping out occasionally with some mailing
and supply gathering. Right now I do *everything*, from web page design to
electronics assembly, parts ordering, shipping, and technical support.
There's definitely not enough volume to support a family doing this, but
I'm having a lot of fun and meeting and talking with a lot of interesting
folks with a lot of COOL cars! :) It's also a small business learning
experience... Sleep? What's that?
