All we need to do now is extract the codes. By using the chart below, we will be able to narrow the problem area down considerably. The following trouble codes are for 1985 to 1990 Camaro IROC-Z vehicles.

OBD-II Information

I've started to receive a number of emails regarding OBDII. Currently, I do not sell any OBDII scan tools (that is going to change in the near future, though). However, I've put together a page here that contains (hopefully) a lot of helpful information for people who are looking for guidance. This only pertains to GM vehicles, as that is all I deal with - I do not deal with any other manufacturer's vehicles. This page starts simple, and gets technical at the end (as to WHY my current OBDI cable is incompatible with OBDII datastreams). There is a lot of information here, sorry about the length Do you have a cable for programming or reading data from an OBDII (1996 or later) vehicle The answer (currently) is NO. I used to build the OBDII cable for the guys at Carputing.com, but they designed the cable, they know the internals, I knew nothing more than where to place and solder the components.

The Gm Aldl Information Page

Here is the schematic for the interface. The car has a bidirectional single wire that operates at TTL (5 volt) levels. Your laptop PC wants separate RS232 transmit and receive ( - 12 volts). This interface converts the single wire ALDL to RS232. The interface board needs 12 volts from somewhere - for '94s, I recommend the cigarette lighter adapter. For '95s, the OBDII D-shaped connector has 12 volts available. Take your pick. But the boards I sell are capable of drawing power from the RS232 port, so you may not need external power from the car.

Notes about GCAR

The command documents may or may not work for your car. From my working with others, I've learned that the '94 hex stream is entirely different in construction than, say, the '97 hex stream (which is an OBDII car anyhoo). The stuff I have here is what I have started with. I have not included my software, as it is a direct variant of the linked software. I use Borland C v 4.52.

Fuel Injection History

Later in 1980 the first digital computerized control was introduced for Cadillac called Digital Fuel injection (DFI), originally conceptualized as a multipoint injection, cost constraints again limited it as a throttle body system with two fuel injectors. Basic LS1 components

The camshaft sensor is a 1X pulse sensor which is synchronized to the 1 firing of the engine (Whether or not it is on its firing or exhaust stroke). The reluctor is located on the back of the camshaft. As the reluctor rotates, it interrupts the magnetic field produced by the sensor and the pcm interprets this as a pulse, after the signal is buffered by the internal circuitry of the CMP. The pcm uses this signal in conjunction with the crankshaft sensor (CKP) to determine the crank position and stroke. The pcm monitors this signal for any problems and sets the appropriate DTC (diagnostic trouble code) for loss or degraded signal. The pcm provides the +12V power, ground and signal return for the CMP.

LT1 Electrical Page

The 1994 through 1996 module years uses the similar style ecm, using a 4 connector terminal for the ecm. The 1994-95 ecm numbers are either 16181333 or 16188051. This is the OBD I ecms, using flash proms instead of the conventional removable eprom of the 1992-93 LT1. In 1996 the ecm numbers changes to either 16214399 or 16242921, this is the first true year of the OBD II systems. In 1994 this changes with the introduction of a 16 pin connector and the phase in of future OBD II diagnostics. Jumping terminals will not work as in previous years, it will require the use of at least a handheld scanner. Some models (CP 9145) such as shown above will allow you to scan and diagnosis the earlier OBD I systems as well.
